Boil Your Water!
As you know, the past two days our area has been under a boil water advisory. This has cause many people to think about what they put into their mouths. There has been a greater awareness of what we use water for and an increased understanding of how we can be safe in our use of water.
I have been thinking about this in spiritual terms. Are we aware of what goes into our lives on a daily basis? Do we make sure no impurities go into our minds and hearts? I have a feeling that most of the time we don’t pay attention to our mind’s intake. What would happen if we took the time to examine everything that comes into our lives? I believe we would have a purer heart and mind…a keener awareness of the good and bad around us…a deeper understanding of the presence of God in our lives.
The scripture says:
3Post a guard at my mouth, God, set a watch at the door of my lips.4Don’t let me so much as dream of evil or thoughtlessly fall into bad company. And these people who only do wrong—don’t let them lure me with their sweet talk! 5May the Just One set me straight, may the Kind One correct me, Don’t let sin anoint my head. I’m praying hard against their evil ways! (Psalms 141:3 – 5, TMSG)
We must always pay attention to the information, images, and data that is filling our lives. After all, we are what we take in!
The danger of lifting the boil water advisory is that we will once again use water without thinking. We must never stop “boiling our water”, the multitude of information and “stuff” flowing into our lives. Our goal is to be pure, just as Christ himself is pure.
