As I listened to Pastor Greg describe stewardship, it made me wonder if I have too narrow a view of what stewardship means. After all, I know that we should give back to God our time and money because it was entrusted to us by God. But what about other things? Scripture says the whole world is God’s and everything in it… and that all good gifts come from God. So does that mean I’m not to withhold anything if it is for the Glory of God? And likewise, should I be extra careful to take care of every good and perfect gift he has entrusted me with? I think the answer is yes.
As I am working out this idea in my mind, I need to be specific. Because it’s January, many people are turning their thoughts to being healthier in 2009. So if my physical body is one thing God has given to me, I need to take care of it. Not so I will look or feel a certain way, but because it is an act of obedience. Please understand, I’m not saying everyone needs to diet or join the YMCA. What I am saying is this: First of all, I’m talking about making a conscious choice not to harm myself. And we all can think of ways which we harm/neglect our bodies. Second of all, I’m talking about making a conscious choice to give my physical body what it needs to be sustained- nutritious food and some mild form of exercise depending on your capabilities. In this way, I truly believe we are exhibiting stewardship. God has untold things for me to do in the future and I want to be healthy enough to do them! Also, Pastor Greg said that stewardship is an act of worship. When we think of worship, we often think of music. Worship is so much more than that- God doesn’t require a song, he’s looking for hearts, minds and even our bodies surrendered to Him.
