I’ve heard a lot of people say how refreshing the sermon was, and I agree. It’s not very often than we intentionlly deprive ourselves and in it’s place (because that’s the point) seek God through prayer, asking Him to examine our hearts. After all, we cannot receive all He has for us during this NT Challenge if we’re full of ourselves- an emptying has to occur.
I read a quote from a book called Knowing God that speaks to this idea: “We must learn to measure ourselves, not by our knowledge about God or our talents or responsibilities at church BUT by how we pray and what goes on in our hearts. MANY OF US, I SUSPECT, HAVE NO IDEA HOW IMPOVERISHED WE ARE AT THAT LEVEL.”
I love that we are called to a time of fasting. It’s at a particular time and for a partcular purpose. But instead of completely setting it aside when the NT Challenge begins, I hope that it’ll have created in us a new desire to go to God on a regular basis, examining our hearts to make sure, as David put it in Psalm 139, “there’s no offensive way in me”.
